Uma Behra Appointed Police Commissioner of Kozhikode

Kozhikode city will once again have a woman Commissioner of Police, after a gap of 17 years. Uma Behra, an IPS officer of the 2007 batch, has been appointed as the new city police commissioner.

A native of Rajasthan, Uma Behra is currently serving as the commandant of the Malabar Special Police (MSP) in Malappuram. She created history by becoming the first woman commandant of the MSP in its 94 years of existence.

Neera Rawat was the last woman officer who held the post of city police commissioner in Kozhikode, during 1997-99.

Uma belongs to the Assam-Nagaland cadre of the IPS and started her career in Meghalaya. Married to Debesh Kumar Behra who is Superintendent of Police, Palakkad, she has been posted in the State IPS cadre from 2010.

A former commandant of the Kerala Thunderbolt, an elite command force of the state police, Uma has also had stints as Assistant Inspector General (Security) at the Police headquarters; SP (Crime Branch) in Kollam as well as SP, Alappuzha and Thrissur Rural.
