Onion is not something traditionally cultivated in Kerala, but onion cultivation is taking root in a big way in the state. Thanks to sustained efforts of Thrissur Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Onion cultivation is picking up momentum in as many as eight districts of Kerala. People are growing onion in fields, backyards and even terraces, The Hindu reports. The research findings of Jalaja Menon in identifying varieties suitable for the soil and climatic conditions in the State have given the right impetus for the new crop culture.
