SmartCity Kochi First Phase in February

The first phase of Kerala’s smart city project SmartCity Kochi (SCK) will be inaugurated in February. This was decided at a meeting of the project’s board of directors in Dubai on Sunday.

The project, developed by Dubai-based promoters Tecom, when complete, envisages generation of about 90,000 jobs in 10 years at an investment of $350 million.

Minister for Industries P K Kunhalikutty led the state IT delegation at the meeting with the joint venture partner Dubai Holdings.

The first phase that would be launched is the 6.5 lakh square feet building, in which, according to the government, 25 major IT companies have already booked space. It would provide direct employment to around 5,500 people.

It is not clear whether Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Ruler and Prime Minister of United Arab Emirates (UAE), will attend the programme. The State government had requested the SmartCity board to ensure his presence.

Along with the inauguration of the first phase, the foundation stone for the second phase – a 47 lakh square feet building – would also be laid. The government had claimed that the second phase would be completed in 30 months.

Kerala’s dream project in the IT sector, SCK was first mooted in 2014 but got delayed and it was only in 2014 that construction was started on the first phase.
