She Taxis in five more districts in Kerala, in other states soon
The Gender Park of the Department of Social Justice, Govt. of Kerala, is all set to introduce She Taxi, the technology-enabled 24/7 women-only taxi service, in more districts of the State shortly. There are also reports that the exclusively by women for women taxi service is set to expand to other states like Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Maharashtra and Karnataka.
After its rollout in Kozhikode a few months back, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur and Malappuram districts are next in the pipeline in Kerala. Besides Kozhikode, She Taxis are being operated in Thiruvananthapuram and Ernakulam districts. The project was first rolled out in Thiruvananthapuram, the capital city, in November 2013 and in Kochi the next year. While Thiruvananthapuram has the most number of cabs at 25, Kochi has 15 and Kozhikode five. Drivers under the scheme are also constantly rated based on several parameters.
The She Taxi project, which is a collaborative venture of Gender Park, Kerala State Women’s Development Corporation (KSWDC), Maruti and banks, was initially meant for Thiruvananthapuram city alone. KSWDC finances the initial down payment of the on-road price of the car and the rest is lent by banks. The beneficiaries have to repay the loan in monthly instalments.
The success of the project in Thiruvananthapuram prompted Gender Park to expand it to other districts. Applications received in other districts where the taxis are to be rolled out shortly also point to the success of the service, says The Hindu in its report. The report says that Alappuzha has registered the most number of applications at 45 followed by Kollam with 25 applications, while there were 10 each in Kottayam and Malappuram, and eight in Thrissur district. Driving licence is the primary criteria for selection, which is ultimately based on a driving test and interview. While the driving test has been completed in Alappuzha, the selection process is yet to start in the other four districts.
