The annual crafts festival at the Sargaalaya Art and Craft Village, near Vadakara, Kozhikode, will go international this time with participation of craftsmen from different South Asian countries.

An understanding has been reached between the State authorities and the United Nations (UN) to promote the festival and unsure participation of craftsmen from South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) nations.

This year, the annual festival will be held from December 20 to January 5. The 17-day festival will have a diverse variety of handicrafts from different parts of the country along with exhibits of international artists. The organizers have made arrangements for 276 stalls at the village.

“The crafts village has been conducting the festival over the past four years. This year, several international artists will participate in the fest, along with artists from across the country. Besides promoting tourism, the event will help in knowing the international artists and their crafts while promoting our own traditional forms beyond the borders in a big way,” said P P Bhaskaran, CEO of the crafts village.

The crafts festival, among other things will offer cultural shows by artistes from different parts of the country on all days at the village. The event is expected to be one of the main attractions of the tourist season this time.

In addition, the State government has decided to include the crafts festival in the Grand Kerala Shopping Festival this year.

The crafts village, under the Kerala Tourism Department, and managed by the eight-decade-old construction society, Uralungal Labor Contract Cooperative Society (ULCCS) was set up to promote local crafts and to ensure protection for traditional artisans who struggle to find markets and fair price for their products.
