Theatre Fest as Tribute to Narendra Prasad

Eight plays written by the late theatre person, Prof. R Narendra Prasad will be staged at the Narendra Prasad Natakolsavam, to be conducted by Natyagriham from November 25 – 29, 2015 at Co-Bank Auditorium, Thiruvananthapuram.

A highlight of the fest will be Souparnika, one of his most acclaimed plays, based on a story from Kottarathil Sankunni’s Aithihyamala. Back on stage after a gap of 25 years, the play will be presented by Natyagriham.

“It was a landmark. Over two years, we performed it in 36 stages across the State and in Delhi. It won the Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi Award for the Best Director and presentation. The play’s script also won the Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award,” said M.K. Gopalakrishnan, who played the lead character of the naive Venmani Namboothiri in that play, to The Hindu.

The other plays to be staged are ‘Murajapathinu Poya Randu Sancharikal,’ presented by Bodhi Nataka Padhana Kendram, Nooranad, ‘Marthanda Varma Engane Rakshappettu,’ from Natakagramam, Kozhikode, ‘Velliyazhcha,’ directed by Narippatta Raju for Natyasastra, Katampazhippuram, Palakkad, ‘Ira,’ from Sunday Theatres, Kasaragode, ‘Swarna Simhasanam,’ from Kanal Nataka Vedi, Thiruvananthapuram, ‘Satheerthyan,’ from Shraddha, Kozhikode and ‘Kumaran Varunnilla,’ from Rangaprasadhana, Mavelikkara.

Natyagriham, the theatre group founded originally by Prof. Narendra Prasad in the early Eighties, was revived in 2013 under the initiative of some theatre persons and theatre enthusiasts based at Thiruvananthapuram. The group has, since then, organised a variety of cultural and theatre-related activities including commemorative programmes on the departed cultural personalities including Dr. Ayyappa Panicker, D. Vinayachandran, Bharat Murali and Prof. R. Narendra Prasad. In September, 2014, Natyagriham organised the Omcherry Natakolsavam, showcasing the plays written by Prof. Omcherry N.N. Pillai, the veteran theatre person who turned 90 that year.
